Cranford baseball team picks up 20th win of the season with first-round victory over Rahway.
The Cranford baseball team has already been crowned Union County Champions, but this Monday the baseball team won its 20th game in the first round of the NJSIAA tournament against Rahway. The Cougars defeated Rahway 7-0 Monday and will move onto the next round to play Summit, who defeated Nutley Friday at 4 p.m. According to NJ.com, Cranford Pitcher Matt Raviter allowed a hit with three strikeouts and no walks in the first four innings of Monday’s game. Other pitchers included, John Armstrong, Matthew DiMartino and George Georgeadis. Cougar Ryan Williamson went 2 for 3 for the team on Monday with a double and three RBIs, NJ.com reported. New York Yankees and Manchester City have teamed up to bring a new professional soccer team to NYC by 2015.
The New York Red Bulls, who call Harrison their home, will not be the only face of professional footy in the metropolitan area for much longer. New York City is planning to kick the ball around in the MLS come the spring of 2015. Major League Soccer Commissioner Dan Garber announced the birth of the newest franchise in the MLS: the New York City Football Club. The new club will be owned by 2012 Barclay’s Premier League champions Manchester City and the 27 time World Series champion New York Yankees. “This opportunity is huge for us and huge for the city. Michael Gaeta of Cranford was one of three outfielders selected to the First Team. Gaeta hit .344 in conference play with 13 RBI. Gaeta earned first-team honors after being a second-team selection last season. He started 41 games, hitting .284 and tying for the team lead in both runs (31) and RBIs (26). He also had eight doubles, two triples, five stolen bases, 19 walks and a team-high 11 times hit by pitch. In the field, Gaeta made just one error in 69 chances for a .986 fielding percentage while playing center field most of the season. Gaeta also picked up his 100th career hit this season. Jets running back Mike Goodson was sent to a Morris County jail following his arrest on drug and weapons charges in Denville Friday. Goodson, 25, was the passenger in a GMC Yukon stopped in the left center lane of I-80 West when a tow truck came upon them and called 911 early Friday morning, according to multiple reports. The tow truck driver reportedly was concerned about the intoxicated condition in which he found Goodson and the driver of the Yukon. Goodson was transported to Saint Claire’s Hospital in nearby Boonton and eventually charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a handgun, and possession of a hollow-point bullet, according to ESPN. Michael Labrutto of Cranford will play in his fourth U.S Open Sectional Qualifying Round next month.
Michael Labrutto of Cranford led the field of 114 players in the May 13 Open Local Qualifying round at Haworth Country Club, advancing him to the qualifying round of the U.S. Open Sectional next month. Labrutto maintained a competitive course record of 6-under 64, carded six birdies and an eagle two on the par-4 16th hold, according to a release from the Metropolitan Golf Association. Thanks to Labrutto's 11-year-old son, who convinced him to enter the qualifier in the first place, Labrutto will now participate in his fourth U.S. U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying Round next month. Cougars stymied by Androconis’ stellar pitching performance
Two days after being soundly beaten by Cranford for the Union County Championship, the Westfield Blue Devil baseballers took to the diamond at Bob Brewster Sr. Field in Westfield Tuesday looking for revenge against the state’s #2 ranked Cougars. And thanks to a strong 6 inning performance by junior pitcher Mike Androconis and a timely RBI triple by senior Eric Demers, Westfield prevailed 2-1, stopping Cranford’s undefeated season after 17 straight wins. Cranford jumped ahead in the first on an RBI single by senior catcher Chris Folinusz (2 hits) but Westfield knotted things up in the bottom of the third, stringing together base hits from juniors Matt Storcks and Chris Arena and a sacrifice fly by junior Mike Ionta to even the score. The Cougars defeated Westfield 8-0 on Sunday, making them the county champs for the eighth year in a row.
On Sunday afternoon the No. 2 seeded Cranford Boys Varsity Baseball team defeated Westfield 8-0 in the Union County Tournament. Cranford has won each of their Union County Tournament match ups since 1999. Of the 60 years the tournament has existed, this is the eighth title for Cranford who is tied with Union for the second most wins behind Westfield who holds 13, according to NJ.com. Cranford who is 17-0 for the season scored the first run in the fourth inning of the game, followed by another four runs. The following information was provided by Union County College. In its first season with a Track and Field program, Union County College has a track athlete who won a national championship. Lady Owl track star Katie Lennon came in first place in the Women’s 10,000-meter run with a time of 42:09.18. She competed yesterday (May 9) in the NJCAA Div. III Nationals held at Howard Community College (Columbia, MD). Her Union County College teammate, Petra Semelova, placed second with a time of 43:26.60. The competition concludes today and features Ms. Lennon and Ms. Semelova running in both the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter finals.
