Sussex Man, Breast Cancer Survivor, Supports Others by Phone

73-year-old fields phone calls from around the country from men diagnosed with breast cancer.

William Woodfill's habit of not using a washcloth in the shower may have saved his life.  "I felt this lump one day ... underneath my left breast," he said. "I knew it shouldn't have been there."  For the next month, he checked the lump, monitoring its progression as it grew from the size of a pea to the size of a lima bean.   "He couldn't stick anything in it, so he said that we had to take it out," he said of the surgeon who attempted to biopsy the growth with a syringe.  It was breast cancer.  "I went back fully expecting not to have cancer," said Woodfill, who noted that about 1,500 men a year are diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. "And that was the big stunner … it flipped the switch from things are normal to things …

Fight Breast Cancer With Your Fork

The foods on your plate can help protect against breast cancer and prevent other diseases as well.

This year, an estimated 226,870 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Of those, close to 40,000 will die of the disease. Eating Local Boosts Breast Cancer Awareness

Local eateries support breast cancer awareness month and The Susan G. Koman Foundation.

In a new twist on October's breast cancer awareness month, some local restaurants are selling ribbon-shaped pretzels and bagels while others are selling T-shirts and illuminating storefronts with pink lights. The efforts are intended to bring attention to breast cancer awareness month and portions of the eateries' proceeds are going toward the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help fund breast cancer research. To bring awareness to the cause and the nosh, Westfield's Philly Pretzel Factory is donating 50 cents to the foundation for every "ribbon" pretzel purchased. October is also national pretzel month. Rick Hendon, owner of the Westfield franchise, with his wife Kelly, says the unique ribbon shape is a best seller. "We're just one small store…
