Contractor Sustains Severe Burns in House Fire on Hamilton Avenue

A second victim is being treated for smoke inhalation following a house fire that erupted Thursday afternoon.

A contractor working with flammable liquids sustained serious injuries and a second victim is being treated for possible smoke inhalation as a result of a fire that broke out in a home located at 28 Hamilton Avenue just after 1 p.m. Thursday. According to Cranford Fire Department Chief Leonard Dolan, the contractor was using a chemical to strip the finish off woodwork in the living room/dining room area of the residence when the fire started. Dolan believes it's possible that a spark from a nearby outlet may have ignited the vapor from the flammable liquid. "It set fire to the contents of the house around where he was working," Dolan said. The exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation. "We're still not sure of the exact origin…

Cranford Middle School Students, Parents Learn about Fire Safety

Students get homework that can teach them how to save a life.

Most people know the basics of fire safety; stop, drop and roll and install fire alarms in their homes. In November, Cranford middle school students and their parents started to learn that there is much more they can do, when they began the fire prevention and safety program, “Fire is.” The New Jersey State Firefighter’s Mutual Benevolent Association started the program a year and a half ago in middle schools across New Jersey thanks to a grant from the NJ Department of Homeland Security. New Jersey is now the first state to have a fire prevention program in its educational system. “We’re trying to put New Jersey on the forefront," Lt. Andy Stratton of the Cranford Fire Department said. The program was developed by retired NY meteorologist…

From 4:30 a.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday, the fire produced thick black smoke that smelled like melting plastic. At about 6:30, red embers began mingling with the smoke, eventually giving way to streaks of red-orange flames bursting through the smoke pouring from the roof.  The fire began at about 4 p.m. Wednesday in the basement of the old Burry Biscuits factory. At 4:47 a.m. Thursday, the blaze was upgraded to seven-alarm status after explosions and heavy smoke conditions were reported. Shed Destroyed in Hillside Fire

No injuries in early afternoon fire.

An early afternoon fire destroyed a shed, lawnmower, weed wacker, fence and gardening tools at a Hillside Avenue residence Saturday. Angelo Bencivenga said he had finished mowing his lawn and placed the lawnmower in the shed behind his home at 224 Hillside Avenue just after 12:30 p.m. He said he went around to the front of the house for a few minutes before he planned to take the weed wacker out of the shed to continue his lawn work. "Someone then said they saw a column of smoke coming out of the shed," Bencivenga said. Two Cranford fire engines responded to the fire, which was contained to the shed.
