Flood-Prone Land Would Be Tax-Exempt Under New Bill

Townships wouldn't have to pay county, school and fire district property taxes.

Bipartisan legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Holly Schepisi, R-Bergen and Passaic, and Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, R-Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer and Middlesex, that would exempt flood-prone properties acquired by municipalities from county, school and fire district property taxes for the following tax year, was approved by the General Assembly on Monday. Hannen Supports Mayors Group Headed to Washington to Discuss Gun Laws

Cranford Mayor Hannen, along with 75 other New Jersey mayors agree with a push for gun control laws in Washington.

Editor's Note: It was originally reported that Mayor Tom Hannen would be joining Fanwood Mayor Collen Mahr on a trip to Washington. Hannen didn't intend on joining the group, but fully supports the effort. Hannen will be in Cranford dealing with a "full-agenda" of Cranford items he told Patch. ----- Fanwood Mayor Collen Mahr will travel to Washington on Wednesday as a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns to petition members of congress to implement stricter gun control laws. Mahr, along with eleven other New Jersey mayors, will meet in Cranford this morning to discuss their plan to tackle the issue. Penalty For TXTing While Driving Increases Under Muñoz Bill

Bill A-1080, would increase fine to $200 for a first offense, $400 for a second offense, and $600 for a third.

Bipartisan legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Nancy F. Muñoz, R-Union, Morris and Somerset, that increases fines for drivers speaking on a hand-held phone or texting while operating a vehicle was released by the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee on Thursday. Under current law, the fine for this motor vehicle violation is $100. Muñoz’ bill, A-1080, would increase that fine to $200 for a first offense, $400 for a second offense, and $600 for a third or subsequent offense. “Driving is a privilege that comes with a responsibility to give full attention to the road,” said Muñoz. “Those who fail to take this responsibility seriously endanger themselves, the passengers in their car and other drivers.
