The following information was provided by the County of Union. The County of Union will sponsor a recycling event for electronic equipment on Saturday, March 23, so Union County residents can get rid of unwanted computers, televisions and other electronic equipment in an environmentally proper manner. The special E-cycling event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alcatel-Lucent Technologies facility located at 600 Mountain Avenue in New Providence. All residents of Union County are eligible to participate at no cost. Cranford police, this morning, said that recycling resumes today. Here is the text of a Nixle alert released this morning. Northside recycling pickup will continue today, 1/16/13. Those residents who live on the Northside and did not have their recycling picked up on 1/15/13 are asked to leave the items at the curb for pickup today. Due to the holiday, the last recycling pickup will take place Dec. 22.
If you're planning a Christmas party, you'll want to make sure you clear out your recycling bin this weekend. Data shows Union County rates for recycling dropping from 2008 to 2009.
Residents in Union County are doing a fare good job recycling their waste. In a county where 1,082,31 million tons of waste was generated, 54.1 percent was recycled according to the most recent numbers, according to NJ Spotlight's latest interactive map. Overall, New Jerseyans are recycling less of their waste than they did in the mid-1990s, data from the state Department of Environmental Protection show. At the peak, residents across the state were recycling 61 percent of what they discarded in 1996 and 1997. That number dropped to 57 percent statewide in 2009. Prior to the enactment of the state’s mandatory recycling law a quarter of a century ago, 10 percent or less of waste was recycled. The law initially set a goal of recycling 25 …

I'll bet that the hardly publicized holiday pickups (http://www.cranford.com/township/Recycle.asp) were not taken advantage of, and the recycling trucks filled up early Tuesday with double the volume at curbside. more ›
