It's all to help people impacted by Hurricane Sandy. ShopRite has lowered the amount shoppers must spend in order to qualify for a free Thanksgiving turkey, according to Supermarket News. The traditional ShopRite turkeyfest happens once a year. During that time, shoppers who spend a certain amount of money can pick up a free turkey for their Thanksgiving table. This year, the supermarket recognizes that people who were affected by the recent hurricane probably didn't have food shopping on their minds - especially with areas of central New Jersey not having electricity, in some cases, for more than a week. As we bid farewell to Thanksgiving, we welcome with open arms the "silly season." You know, a few weeks of mad shopping, parties and revelry followed by Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year's Eve. Let's face it, the day after Thanksgiving is not a day for cooking. In fact it's hard to muster up any energy at all in the kitchen. Last year, four traffic-related deaths occurred during Thanksgiving weekend because of drugs and alcohol.
Despite high gas prices and the old adage that there's no place like home for the holidays, the American Automobile Association forecasts 42.5 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. That figure represents a four percent increase from the 40.9 million people who traveled one year ago. The official Thanksgiving Day holiday period begins Wednesday at 6 p.m. and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Division of Highway Traffic Safety. Last year, five people in New Jersey died during this period. Four of those deaths were in traffic crashes involving alcohol or drugs. Too busy to read this because you're too busy cooking? No worries. This quickie recipe for homemade cranberry sauce can be made in 10 or 15 minutes with minimal fuss and absolutely no hassle. Given to me years ago by my good friend Lorraine Bowyer, I now make a double batch every year at Thanksgiving.
