A day-long event featuring food, drink and popular New Jersey rock bands on Sunday will raise funds for Red Cross efforts to meet the needs of those victimized by Hurricane Sandy. The "Unite 2 Revive" will be held at Jersey’s Sports Bar, located at 116 Third Ave. in Neptune, from noon to 7 p.m. The fundraising event is being presented by Stars that Shine Entertainment, LLC, TOURPAX, and Synergy Event Planners. The restaurant will be serving food and drink specials during the event and sponsors include Patch sites throughout New Jersey. Guests are welcome to attend throughout the day to enjoy music from local bands including: The Eddie Testa Band, Guy Smiley, Rome, Undercover, Kindred, Marc Ribler & friends and Nobs Overdrive. Extensive damage could delay service restorations across rail and bus linking NJ, NY and Philadelphia
The nation's largest statewide public transportation system says it faces a massive repair and restoration effort in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. NJTransit, consisting of 12 commuter train lines, 3 light rail lines and 261 bus routes, suffered "unprecedented devastation" from the storm, according to James Simpson, New Jersey's transportation commissioner and chairman of the NJTransit board. The system normally provides 895,000 weekday trips, servicing 164 rail stations, 61 light rail stations and more than 19,000 bus stops. Little of that activity was evident on Tuesday, however. The Virginia Task Force One team is on its way to Fort Dix as it prepares to respond to destruction after Hurricane Sandy.
Before Fairfax County's world-renowned Urban Search and Rescue Team assists in major disasters — such as Hurricane Sandy — there is a lot of preparing and waiting involved. Much of that occurs in a nondescript industrial-style building in Chantilly. On Monday, the 80-member team — many of whom had been up through much of the night — prepared to deploy to Fort Dix, N.J., to assist in recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. They departed on buses shortly before noon, and only found out minutes before leaving where they would be going to wait for recovery efforts. The following information was provided by the County of Union. The Union County Medical Reserve Corps has been activated to staff a regional shelter at the Cranford Community Center, 220 Walnut Ave. in Cranford. The shelter is accepting pets, however, owners must bring crates for animals, food, and litter and any waste disposal bags, etc. for their pets. If animals pose a threat they will have to be removed. Limited food and water are available for people. No medications will be available. Those in need of the shelter are advised to bring their own medications, any personal hygiene items, etc. Also, a regional Special Needs/Functional Needs Shelter is located in nearby Middlesex County at: the Woodbridge Community Center, 600 Main St. …
