Thousands Expected At County's Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade

The Annual Union County St. Patrick's Day Parade will step off at 1 p.m. Saturday in Union. Organizations from nearly every town in the county will participate.

Seventeen years after the first Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade stepped off up Morris Avenue the tradition continues on March 16 at 1 p.m. sharp with thousands of marchers and spectators gathering to celebrate the patron saint of Ireland. This year’s Grand Marshal, Jim Tansey, will lead the march of bagpipe and high school bands, local police and fire department units, veterans groups and many more organizations through the center of Union. “The Parade Committee is very proud to have as fine an Irishman as Jim Tansey leading our parade,” said Kelly Anne Scanlon, General Chairman of the 2013 Parade. “We are looking forward to another brilliant parade celebrating St. Patrick and our Irish heritage.” This year’s parade is dedicated to …

Parade Committee To Host 'Finnegan's Wake' Party and Fun Run

The Union County St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee will continue the festivities leading up to next month's parade.

The Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee will host its annual “Finnegan’s Wake” party and “Guinness Fun Run/Walk” on Saturday, February 23, at the Blackthorn Restaurant and Irish Pub located at 651 N. Michigan Avenue in Kenilworth, New Jersey. Registration for the “Guinness Fun Run/Walk” will start at 11:30 a.m. at the Blackthorn. There is a $25 registration fee that includes a t-shirt, complimentary beverages and admission into the “Finnegan’s Wake” party. The race will commence at 12:30 p.m. The race should end by 12:35 p.m. “Finnegan’s Wake” will feature live Irish-American entertainment by The Mike Byrne Band starting at 12:45 p.m. Admission is $20 per person and includes beer, wine and food. UC St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee Names Grand Marshal

Jim Tansey, a supervisor in the Prosecutor's Office and a Newark native, will lead this year's parade in March.

The 2013 Union County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has announced that Jim Tansey has been named grand marshalof the 17th annual Union County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Tansey, the supervisor of the Special Prosecutions Unit in the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, has been involved with the Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade for many years, and has served as a trustee and a division adjutant. “On parade day I will be celebrating my heritage and my family,” Grand Marshal Tansey said. “I will be marching in honor and in the memory of the deceased members of my family who were all proud Irish Americans.” A native of the Vailsburg section of Newark, Tansey traces his Irish roots to Counties Roscommon and Mayo.
