Westfield: NJ Officials Probing Teen's Possible Death From Flu

The state Dept. of Health and Senior Services is looking into the death of a Westfield High student this week.

The following is a statement from the Westfield Board of Health: The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services has received a report regarding the death of a Union County juvenile and are investigating it as a suspected flu death. While this case is still under investigation, it is important to keep in mind the following steps you can take to avoid the flu: Residents are encouraged to contact their private physician for guidance if they suspect they have the flu. Those who have the flu should stay home for at least 24 hours after a fever is gone (without the use of a fever-reducing medicine) except to get medical care. CHS Alum Leads Westfield Students Through Africa

Soriente teams with fellow WHS teacher Garodnick to lead environmental research trip.

A Cranford High School alum has been busy this summer leading a group of Westfield High School students through Africa. Westfield High School earth science teacher Sara Soriente, a 2000 graduate of CHS, has been co-leading 11 WHS students on an environmental research trip in South Africa and Mozambique. The group, which left on July 13, arrives back in the United States on Sunday morning. Soriente, who is leading the trip with WHS physics teacher Josh Garodnick, found out about the trip through the group Operation Wallecia. The group helps students groups conduct environmental research in Africa. “It is a once a lifetime experience for them to be there,” Soriente said in a July interview with Westfield Patch. “They can do real …
