Police Release Details on Lincoln Ave. Man, 86, Killed in Crash

Frederick Rizkalla suffered from an undisclosed medical episode prior to crashing.

Editor's Note: The following uses information from a press release from the Cranford Police Department. Frederick Rizkalla of Lincoln Avenue in Cranford, was driving northbound on Walnut Avenuearound 8:47a.m. on Nov. 29, in his 2008 Chevy Impala when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree. The 86-year-old died shortly thereafter at University Hospital in Newark. The Cranford Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a single car motor vehicle crash on Walnut Avenue near the intersection of Lenhome Drive South. The preliminary investigation revealed that Rizkalla suffered from a medical episode prior to crashing. Members of the Cranford Police, Fire, and EMS treated Rizkalla on scene.   A follow-up investigation is …

Off-Duty First Aid Squad Member Tried to Help After Fatal Crash

A Cranford man lost his life in a crash on Walnut Avenue Thursday. A volunteer Cranford First Aid Squad member saw the accident and rushed to help.

Johnathan Canas was driving along Walnut Avenue on his way to a job in Rahway Thursday morning. A little worn out from the night before, the Cranford EMS squad member had just finished an unusually busy overnight shift that ended around 6a.m. What happened during his drive to work caught him by surprise, but he was prepared. "He hit the tree so hard the rear of the car lifted up, and came back down to the ground," Canas,22, said about the 2008 Chevy Impala that crashed into a tree, with a Cranford man inside. Canas, who lives in Cranford, was about four cars away from the scene. He flipped on his car's emergency light and swung around the other vehicles so he was able to help.  "All the doors were locked," he said. "I went back into my car…

Witnesses Describe Scene of Fatal Walnut Crash

A Cranford man was killed in a crash on Walnut Avenue this morning. Cranford Police have not yet released the victim's name.

Update: 1:10p.m. A man driving a black compact car was killed after colliding with a tree this morning in the 400 block of Walnut Avenue, about a block away from Walnut Avenue School. According to Cranford Police Lt. James Wozniak, the fatal accident occurred just before 9a.m. A large branch from the tree fell on top of the vehicle, but was removed by local landscapers who stopped to assist, according to one neighbor. The exact cause of death and the accident victim's identity has not yet been released by police. Joe Diprofio, a local landscaper who was not involved with the attempted rescue, but was working near the crash site said he was driving on the road earlier in the morning, and described the scene: "I saw a black car that was …
