Photo Gallery: Blinking Squad Cars Draw Crowd to National Night Out
Cranford Police Department hold mini fair across the street from headquarters.
Sirens were blinking by the gazebo in front of police headquarters yesterday, marking the spot in which National Night Out was taking place – a mini-fair that focuses on local law enforcement.
Organized by the CPD in Cranford, the free event is a nationwide one organized in dozens of communities and promotes crime prevention awareness.
Around 400 children and adult attendees checked out the police emergency vehicles, squad cars and other police equipment on display. In addition, a face painter was on-hand to transform children into supermen and animals.

Organizer Detective Robert Montague explained that for the CPD, National Night Out is more than just a neighborhood fun event – officers make themselves available to residents who want to ask questions about the department.
"This way regular residents can come down and talk," he said.

There was also a blood drive at the scene, taking donations in honor of state patrolman Mark Castellano, who was killed on duty.
