Third Annual Rubber Ducky Derby Returns to Cranford

The Hanson Park Conservancy event will be held on Oct. 13.

Yellow, pink and blue rubber ducks will make their way down the Rahway River on Oct. 13 as part of the Hanson Park Conservancy’s Third Annual Cranducky Derby.

The rubber ducks will be released in the Rahway River at Sperry Park, each individually tied to an individual number matched to the owner.  The race will conclude when the duckies arrive at the finish line at North Union Avenue.

“Attendees are asked to expect the unexpected,” HPC explained before last year’s event. “Prepare to cheer on their rubber ducks racing down the Rahway River and over the Sperry Park waterfalls to the finish line at the North Union Ave Bridge.”

A dozen prizes will be awarded, including a grand prize of a $250 gift card.

Tickets can be purchased at Joanie’s Café, Periwinkles or the Canoe Club. A single duck is $5 and a flock of 5 ducks is $20. Only a limited number of ducks are available.

All proceeds benefit Hanson Park located at 38 Springfield Avenue, Cranford.

The conservancy said: “This little park has become an integral part of our community as well as HPC’s ongoing educational programs.”

Hanson Park restoration project has been ongoing since residents spawned the idea in 2004. Phase two of the project, which includes a butterfly meadow and display garden are now underway.
