Five Things You Need To Know Today: Fourth of July Edition

The events and happenings around town this Independence Day.

  1. Canoe Race. The kick off at 8:00 a.m. The event is hosted by the Cranford Canoe Club. Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each of the several categories.
  2. Firecracker Four Mile.  will take place at Nomahegan Park at 9:00 a.m. The event is sponsored by Investors Savings Bank and the Cranford Jaycees. Registration is $25 and includes a t-shirt while supplies last. Raffles will be held and prizes awarded during post race festivities. 
  3. Bike Decorating Contest. A Bike Decorating Contest will be held at Nomahegan Park at 1:30 p.m. All bikes must be decorated at home. The contest will be broken into several age groups; four and under, five to seven, and eight to 10 years old. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be awarded in each age group. 
  4. Games and Races. Fun games for all ages will be held at Nomahegan Park beginning at 2:00 p.m. Ribbons will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each game.  Every child will receive a participation ribbon. There will be food vendors in the park offering zeppoles, pork and beef barbecue, sausage and hot dogs, ice cream and assorted drinks from 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.
  5. Fireworks Display. The Cranford Recreation and Parks Department is hosting to help honor Cranford's 140th Anniversary. The event will take place this evening beginning at 9:05 p.m. at Nomahegan Park. The fireworks will be much larger this year to commemorate Cranford's anniversary, and will include a special anniversary wish from Garden State Fireworks. Limited parking will be available at Union County College, however, residents are urged to walk if possible.
