Petra McTiernan Raises Funds for Woodbridge Shelter

Six-year-old Petra McTiernan holds fundraiser to help stray cats and dogs.

Accomplishment: Six-year-old Petra McTiernan raised $205 and collected dog and cat food for homeless cats and dogs at Woodbridge Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center.

The inspiration: Petra's pet is a stray cat named Smudge that the family took in after she kept appearing at their back door. Petra really wanted to help pets without homes, in a similar situation to her own pet.

"She knew Smudge was homeless," said her father Peter. "She told us she wanted to help dogs and cats that have no home."

How she did it: With the help of parents Peter and Mary, Petra threw a dog and cat themed birthday party on March 27 at Surgent's Elite School of Gymnastics in Garwood. She asked friends and family who attended to make a donation to her cause.

Each week, Cranford Patch seeks suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups and teens that wow us with their accomplishments to be Patch Kid (or kids) of the Week. Send your suggestions to michelle@patch.com. Remember to include a photo!
