CHS Student Constructs Tennis Court Backboard for Eagle Scout Project

Alex Levy constructed and installed a backboard at the Hillside Avenue School tennis courts as part of his Eagle Scout service project.

Cranford High School junior, Alex Levy, decided to construct and install a 10x20 hitting wall at the Hillside Avenue Tennis courts as part of his Eagle Scout project.

Levy, along with some volunteers, completed the installation of the wall at the end of October. In addition to the wall, he is also working on donating nets, balls and racquets to the Cranford 10 & under tennis instruction programs.

“I am extremely proud of the way the backboard came out. It is an amazing experience to take an idea and produce it on such a large scale, and I smile every time I now every time I go past the courts,” Levy said “I couldn’t imagine the backboard coming out much better than it did. Completing this project is a real weight lifted off my shoulders.”

Levy has gone through the youth tennis programs in Cranford and is a member of the Varsity Tennis Team at Cranford High School. When his Eagle Scout advisor suggested the scouts choose something close to their heart, he was immediately drawn to providing a better tennis experience for children in Cranford.

“Becoming an Eagle Scout is such a prestigious achievement that only a small percentage of boy scouts achieves,” Levy told Patch. “People everywhere look at Eagle Scouts highly because it shows leadership, dedication and hard work, Scouting has exposed me to experiences and practical instruction that give me the confidence to know how to handle myself in everyday and extreme situations.”

Levy explained that the project took time and patience. Friends and family offered him assistance to erect the wall, as well as the donation of materials, tools, etc. He added that the largest donation he received was from the United States Tennis Association, as part of their Facility Improvement program.

“After a lengthy proposal process I was recently approved for this grant. Like most events in my life, my parents have been my greatest supporters of my efforts and me and have helped to guide me through this project,” he added.

The backboard is now installed at the tennis courts at Hillside Avenue School and Levy is hoping that once the weather is warmer he can invite the Cranford Art Service Club to paint the board and give it a little more personality.
