Cranford WWII Veteran, Thomas Madonia, Dies at 88

Madonia worked as an engineer for Westinghouse and Phillips for 34 years.

Loving father and PopPop, Thomas Madonia, 88, passed away Tuesday January 14, 2014 at Newton Memorial Hospital. He lived in Cranford and Rahway for many years.

Friends are invited to visit 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Ave. West in Cranford. Mass of Christian Burial 9:30 AM Monday St. Michael’s Church, Cranford. Interment in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.

A professional engineer, he worked for Westinghouse and Phillips for 34 years. He was a Eucharistic minister and counter at St. Michael’s Church, a member of the Cranford Knights of Columbus, and the Roselle Golf Club. Mr. Madonia was a Navy veteran of World War II and a 1951 graduate of Villanova University. He had received many awards from the Toastmasters Association for his public speaking.

He will be fondly remembered as a great father, Friend, coach, and #1 PopPop.
Mr. Madonia was predeceased by his beloved wife, Winifred.

Surviving are 3 loving children, Terry Madonia Breslin and her husband Sean, Christine Madonia Zimmerman and her husband Reg, and Stephen Madonia and his wife, Virginia; six devoted grandchildren Andrew and Mary Kate Madonia, Michael, Tommy, and Kevin Breslin, and Mathew Zimmerman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
