Driver Was On Drugs When SUV Overturned, Police Say

Jonathan Perez, 25, of Newark, overturned his vehicle during a crash while under the influence of narcotics, police said.

A Newark man under the influence of narcotics was involved in a car crash between his Ford Explorer and another vehicle causing it to overturn on Commerce Drive early Wednesday evening, according to Cranford Police.

Jonathan Perez, 25, was charged with assault by auto, driving under the influence of narcotics and possession of prescription pills, Sgt. Gerard Quinn reported.

The Cranford Police Department responded to the scene of an overturned auto shortly before 5 p.m., when Det. Steven Toy discovered several prescription medications and narcotics from the vehicle, Quinn said.

Toy and Det. Russell Luedecker also issued Perez citations for reckless driving and driving with a suspended license, according to the report.

Perez, a passenger and the passenger of the second vehicle were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

He was released pending a court appearance on Oct. 23.
