UCC Student from Cranford Awarded Merit Scholarship

Carlos Arias-Miranda has been recognized by the R&D Council of NJ.


Carlos Arias-Miranda of Cranford is one of 16 recipients to receive the 2013 Merit Scholarship awarded by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey for his intent to pursue civil engineering once he graduates.

Currently, Arias-Miranda is studying civil engineering at Union County College and hopes to pursue a career at a civil engineering firm.

To become a Merit Scholar, applicants must have a 3.5 GPA or greater, a STEM major, extracurricular activities financial need and post-graduation career goals, according to the organization. A select committee of senior representatives from industry, academia and government whom are members of the R&D Council choose the Merit Scholars.

“These accomplished young people are the key to a bright future of research and development in New Jersey,” said Ian Shankland, Chairman of the Board of Director and Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer at Honeywell Performance Materials and Technologies in a release.

Arias-Mirand will join 15 other recipients for a luncheon in August, including UCC students Diana Lourenco (Biology), Ghislain Youdom (Computer Science and Engineering), Gian Baquerizo (Information Science Technology) and Sara Yusim (Architecture).

During the luncheon at member of the R&D Council’s facility, the students will have the opportunity to meet prominent New Jersey researchers and innovators in a variety of fields, as well as witness a panel discussion on issues that they are interested in.
