Letter to the Editor: Cranford Rotary Club Collects Over 50 Bikes for Nicaraguans

The bikes will be used for Nicaraguans to get to work, school and the market.

Letter to the editor,

On Saturday, May 11, the Cranford Rotary Club partnered with Pedals for Progress to collect 56 used bicycles, two sewing machines, and $560 in monetary donations.  The bikes will be shipped to Nicaragua, where they will be refurbished and sold at low cost to people who will use them to get to work, move goods to market, and get to school.

It is very satisfying to know that the bikes will be put to good use rather than ending up in landfills. I wish to thank everyone who donated to the collection. I would also like to thank Cranford Rotarians David Del Vecchio, Barbara Ginsberg, Marc Brown, Steve Lieberman, and Jim Murphy for their help at the collection, as well as Steve Robertazzi, Cranford Swim Pools Director, for making the Orange Avenue Pool parking lot available for the collection.

Since it was founded in 1991, Pedals for Progress has received, processed, and donated more than 130,000 bicycles, 2,000 used sewing machines, and $10.8 million in new spare parts to partner charities in 38 developing countries.

If you missed the collection and have bicycles to donate, visit Pedals for Progress at p4p.orgfor a calendar of upcoming collections.

Sincerely,

John Malar
